HEURISTIC ANALYSIS OF SPARTAN BOOKSTORE
Goal:
Conduct a heuristic analysis of SJSU Spartan Bookstore website based on usability principles, identify principle-level and interface-level usability issues and recommend solutions.
Process:
•Contextual Inquiry conducted by visiting on-campus store.
•Analyzed individual pages and elements of the SJSU Spartan Bookstore website with respect to human factors heuristics.
•Created user groups and personas. Generated use case scenarios for web purchases and in-store purchases.
•Inquiry methods:
•A survey to capture an essence from current students and alumni.
•Semi-structured interviews to assess the expectations and current issues with the website.
•A mini-usability study to evaluate performance.
Key Findings:
•The analysis indicated that the website had major flaws in the user-centric design, at principle and interface levels.
•The information architecture was not clearly organized; visual cues, navigational menus, hierarchies were not clearly visible. The website lacked visibility and visual momentum.
•Inaccurate textbook search function, inconsistent homepage design and layout and a lack of feedforward or feedback mechanisms were observed.
